Understanding the Migratory Pathway

You have to understand,

that no one puts their children in a boat

unless the water is safer than the land.

No one burns their palms under trains, beneath carriages...

No one spends days and nights in the stomach of a truck, feeding on newspaper...

unless the miles traveled

mean something more than the journey.

No one crawls under fences...

No one wants to be beaten or pitied...

No one chooses refugee camps

or strip searches where your body is left aching...

or prison, because prison is safer

than a city of fire.

This simulation was designed to help raise awareness on the reality of the migratory pathway between Turkey and the European Union (EU) and to encourage more empathy and understanding towards forced migrants. In light of recent events at the borders between EU and non-EU member states - which include disgusting incidents of border violence and illegal deportations known as "pushbacks", increasingly hostile migration policies, and violations of international law and human rights law - this educational tool is vital for helping influence increased awareness and the wider narrative on displacement issues.

This simulation is intended solely as an educational experience.  This simulation was created with input from forced migrants along the pathway, and through information from news articles, academic literature, books, documentaries, and other miscellaneous sources. We encourage you to explore the additional resources located at the bottom of the page.

Because pathways and migratory journeys are constantly changing, our additional resource page is a working google document that is updated regularly and will better reflect current trends than the simulation itself. We have done our best to create this pathway to reflect a realistic journey, but note that these pathways are constantly changing.

This simulation is not intended to promote these dangerous irregular journeys and is purely for educational purposes. If you'd like to review our resources for this simulation, please contact us

Forget pride.

Survival is more important

than home.

No one leaves home

until home is a sweaty voice in your ear saying-

run away from me now.

I don't know what I've become -

but I know that anywhere

is safer than home."
